Meet the caring, experienced Wilmington Reproductive Labs clinical team:

William Baird

William C. Baird, PhD, HCLD (#7024), is the laboratory director of Wilmington Reproductive Labs.

Baird is the founder/laboratory director of Cryobiology Inc. (a sperm bank) and Reproductive Diagnostics, Inc., an entity associated with Ohio Reproductive Medicine. Cryobiology and Reproductive Diagnostics have consistently rated among the top reproductive laboratories in Ohio.

Baird has put his expertise to work in eastern North Carolina as a consulting scientist at ECU Physicians Women’s Clinic. With ECU Physicians no longer offering full-service reproductive health services, Baird joined research director Dr. Chad Johnson and laboratory supervisor Nel McLawhorn to found Wilmington Reproductive Labs.

Baird received his Ph.D. in reproductive biology from The Ohio State University in 1982 and has been practicing in the field of clinical human reproduction since then. He is certified by the American Board of Bioanalysts as a High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD). He has been a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the American Association of Tissue Banks for more than 25 years.

Baird is a past chair of the Reproductive Council of the American Association of Tissue Banks, and he wrote the IVF laboratory guidelines for the College of American Pathology.

Chad Johnson

Chad Johnson, PhD, HCLD (#6699) is the scientific director of Wilmington Reproductive Laboratories, and a founding partner of Wilmington Reproductive Labs.

His successful career in clinical in vitro fertilization has spanned more than 27 years. He is a cofounder of the Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine.

Johnson completed his undergraduate coursework in animal sciences at the University of Delaware. He subsequently attended Louisiana State University for his master’s degree in Animal Sciences.

Following his studies at LSU, Dr. Johnson earned his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from Clemson University in South Carolina. He is certified by the American Board of Bioanalysts as a High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director.

Nel McLawhorn

Nel McLawhorn, BS MT(ASCP), TS(ABB), is the technical supervisor for Wilmington Reproductive Labs.

Her extensive experience in reproductive science includes more than 16 years of clinical experience. McLawhorn earned her undergraduate degree in medical technology from the University of South Carolina. For 16 years, she was the technical supervisor of the andrology and embryology laboratories at ECU Women’s Physicians in Greenville, NC. McLawhorn holds clinical certifications from the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the American Board of Bioanalysts.
